Xiaomi files a lawsuit seeking to overturn former Trump administration's blacklisting

Xiaomi says on Sunday it has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the former Trump administration's last-minute blacklisting of the electronics giant. Xiaomi said it filed the appeal with a Washington federal court Friday after former president Donald Trump's administration barred investment in the firm, saying the Beijing-headquartered company was a part of the Chinese military. Xiaomi said it "believes that the decision ... was factually incorrect and has deprived the company of legal due process."

"With a view to protect the interest of its global users, partners, employees and shareholders, Xiaomi Corporation has filed proceedings in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia against the Department of Defense and Department of Treasury of the United States, for listing the company as “Communist Chinese Military Company," the statement added.

Representational image: Reuters

Just six days before Trump left office, his officials made a series of announcements targeting Xiaomi and other Chinese firms including state oil giant CNOOC and embattled social media favourite TikTok.

Xiaomi – which overtook Apple last year to become the world's third-largest smartphone manufacturer – was one of nine firms the Pentagon classified as "Communist Chinese military companies." As per the executive order signed by Trump, after the ban, US investors had to divest their stakes in Chinese companies on the military list by November 2021.

The measure was seen as an attempt to cement Trump's trade war legacy with China after four years of turbulent relations with Beijing.

The blacklisting means US investors cannot buy Xiaomi securities.

The company's stock price dropped more than 10 percent following the blacklisting.

Netflix is currently testing a timer feature for Android devices: Report

Netflix, for Android devices, could soon be getting a new time feature. The company has been testing a sleep timer that would stop the video playback on its own, after a set time limit. This story is available on The Verge website. This new feature will allow users to choose between four timer settings that include a 15 minutes timer, 30 minutes timer, 45 minutes timer, or end of whatever they are watching. As soon as the time limit comes to an end the app would automatically stop.

netflix-logo1280

Theoretically, this feature will aid in saving battery in Android devices, while making sure that the episodes don't continue via auto-play.

For now, the test is limited to selected Android users but Netflix could bring this feature to other devices like desktops, TV sets, depending on how widely the product is used.

[hq]How to use the timer feature on Android devices[/hq]

[hans][hstep]Step 1:Select your favorite TV show or movie on your mobile device[/hstep]

[hstep]Step 2: Users will see a clock icon on the upper right labeled as Timer[/hstep]

[hstep]Step 3: Click on the Timer[/hstep]

[hstep]Step 4: Now select from the 15, 30, 45 minutes, or Finish Show options[/hstep][/hans]

The feature, for now, is only available for adult profiles. The new screen time option feature could be a great option for kids too and the company could potentially make a version of the same or account profiles designed for children, depending on how well the feature is received. Instead of tapping on the clock icon and setting the timer, the feature for kids should be tweaked a little, as kids tend to tap on screens frequently.

This seems like a pretty cool feature, especially if you are someone, who falls asleep watching Netflix or other content on the phone. Having a turn-off option when an episode ends seems like a great feature.

Maine-based bluShift aerospace successfully launches prototype rocket in test flight

A Maine company that’s developing a rocket to propel small satellites into space passed its first major test on Sunday. Brunswick-based bluShift Aerospace launched a 20-foot (6-meter) prototype rocket, hitting an altitude of a little more than 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) in a first run designed to test the rocket’s propulsion and control systems. It carried a science project by Falmouth High School students that will measure flight metrics such as barometric pressure, a special alloy that’s being tested by a New Hampshire company — and a Dutch dessert called stroopwafel, in an homage to its Amsterdam-based parent company.

Organizers of the launch said the items were included to demonstrate the inclusion of a small payload.

The company, which launched from the northern Maine town of Limestone, the site of the former Loring Air Force Base, is one of dozens racing to find affordable ways to launch so-called nano satellites. Some of them, called Cube-Sats, can be as small as 10 centimeters by 10 centimeters.

On 31 January 2021, an unmanned bluShift Aerospace rocket lifted off in a test run in Limestone, Maine. It was the first commercial rocket launch in Maine history. Image: The Knack Factory/bluShift Aerospace via AP

Sascha Deri, chief executive officer of bluShift, said the company is banking on becoming a quicker, more efficient way of transporting satellites to space.

“There’s a lot of companies out there that are like freight trains to space,” Deri said. “We are going to be the Uber to space, where we carry one, two or three payloads profitably.”

Another aspect that makes bluShift’s rocket different is its hybrid propulsion system.

It relies on a solid fuel and a liquid oxidizer passing either through or around the solid fuel; the result is a simpler, more affordable system than a liquid fuel-only rocket, said spokesperson Seth Lockman. The fuel is a proprietary biofuel blend sourced from farms, Deri said.

“It’s a very nontoxic fuel, I like to say that I could give it to either one of my little daughters. Nothing bad would happen to them, I swear,” he said. “So it’s very much nontoxic. It’s carbon neutral.”

The goal is to create a small rocket that could launch a 30-kilogram (66-pound) payload into low-Earth orbit, more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) above Earth’s surface. Lockman said orbit could be possible by 2024.

The company has spent $800,000 on research and development, with some of the money coming from NASA.

Representatives from bluShift said they don’t anticipate being able to launch from Brunswick, where they are headquartered, because of population density in the area.

An attempted test launch in Limestone earlier in January was postponed because of weather. Sunday’s launch was also held back by a couple of false starts, but event organizers described the eventual 3 p.m. liftoff as “perfect.”

HMD Global confirms plans of launching affordable 5G phones in India

HMD Global, the Finnish company that acquired the rights to the Nokia brand of smartphones, is looking to make India its hub for its global supply chain while also launching affordable 5G Nokia phones in this fast-expanding market.

Company vice-president Sanmeet Kocchar revealed that HMD Global was looking to launch customized smartphones in the Indian market, where 5G networks are all set to make mobile data-led computing the next rage. For this, they recently tied up with an Indian electronics manufacturing company to make Nokia phones.

In 2020, HMD Global had secured $230 million from Google, Qualcomm and Nokia Technologies and is now prepared to invest in capacity expansion, which could also include investing in Indian manufacturing and distribution. A report published in the Financial Express quotes Kocchar to suggest that making India the hub of their global supply chain was also being studied.

"We are looking at India as an important market and the first thing that we are going to do is look at products which are customized for the Indian market. Second is 5G, which is an important space that we have decided to play in, and we are looking at how we can launch more affordable 5G devices this year," he said.

Dixon Technologies, one of India's largest consumer electronics solutions company, had announced a tie-up with HMD Global last week. In a regulatory filing, Dixon said its subsidiary, Padget Electronics, would be making Nokia smartphones at the Noida facility in Uttar Pradesh.

Kocchar was also quoted as saying by the Financial Express that HMD Global would henceforth focus on product differentiation through future-proofed software. Does this mean that Nokia phones would add its two cents to the Android platform on which their devices work? Well, we are not sure as all that Kocchar says is that future Nokia phones have software that will last longer thus removing the need to change the device frequently.

One thing the company says it would not get into is setting up its own manufacturing plants in India. "We have different partners, including Google, Qualcomm, Nokia, and others in the ecosystem and we work closely with our partners to see how we can offer the best products to our fans," he says.

This Ecovacs robot vacuum and mop has hit its lowest price yet at just AU$569

Why do the vacuuming when you can (quite literally) get something else to do the job for you? Heck, it will even mop up after you if you need it to. And that's where robot vacuum cleaners come in.

These days you can get dual-function autonomous droids that not just suck, but wet mop as well – useful if you primarily have hard floors in your home. Some of the best robot vacuums that you can get that do it all for you are from Ecovacs Robotics, and this is your chance to snap one up for a sweet low price of just AU$569.

Available from Amazon Australia right now, this is the lowest price we've seen for the Deebot Ozmo 920 yet – it was AU$599 during Black Friday in November 2020.

That's a great price for a robot vacuum cleaner that will vacuum your carpets and hard floors, and mop up after itself as well. There's enough suction power to suck up hair and fur off low-pile carpets and, with a battery life of up to 130 minutes, it's capable of cleaning a two- or three-bedroom home in one go. In case it can't manage the full space in one shot, it will automatically head back to its charging dock, top up, and pick up where it left off.

For this price, you're also getting a robot vacuum cleaner that can hit corners and edges thanks to two side brushes with long bristles, a bar brush that's capable of getting into cracks in the floor that are up to 4mm deep, and will automatically increase power when it detects a carpet. This carpet-detection sensor also automatically switches off the mopping functionality when the bot climbs onto a rug.

The Deebot 920 also uses Ecovacs' latest Navi 3.0 technology, allowing it to systematically clean a room, leaving no uncleaned spots around the house. If it does miss a spot, you can always send it back by using the companion app, which is also remarkably easy to use and perfect for controlling the vacuum remotely.

The app also allows you to set a cleaning schedule, so you can do other, more important things. You can even use your smart speaker to control the device by connecting the app to Alexa or Google Assistant.

The only physical thing you need to do is attach the mopping plate and fill the reservoir if you need the bot to mop, and empty the bin when it's full. Can you already picture the amount of time you can save with this smart device? It's worth the investment right now when it's at its cheapest yet on Amazon Australia.

Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 920 | AU$1,099 AU$569 on Amazon (save AU$530)

When the Deebot 920 first arrived, it cost over the one grand mark. Now, however, it's possible to get it for much less – 48% less to be precise – a price that's lower than its Black Friday offer. So suck up this deal and earn yourself some free time to do the things you'd rather do than vacuuming the house.View Deal

Optus acquires Amaysim: here's what it means for new and existing customers

Optus announced in November that it would be acquiring the fourth-largest mobile provider in Australia, Amaysim, and today the telco has completed that acquisition. Amaysim was founded in 2010 and already operates on the Optus 4G Plus cellular network.

This purchase (which cost the telecommunications giant a cool AU$250 million) is part of a two-pronged approach at bolstering its status in Australia against its major competitor, Telstra.

The other prong of this strategy is the introduction of new virtual telco Gomo – a budget mobile provider that Optus' parent company, Singtel, has been running in Singapore since 2019 and is also available in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

How does this affect Amaysim?

The good news, for both new and existing Amaysim customers, is that it will remain a standalone brand and "customers will continue to benefit from Optus’ premium, nationwide network".

Given the extra power behind Amaysim now, we can likely expect it to present a more affordable alternative to Optus' more premium plans, much the same way Virgin Mobile did previously.

While this means we're unlikely to see 5G connectivity with Amaysim in the immediate future, we expect it to continue offering affordable SIM-only options with decent data inclusions, no lock-in contracts, and the occasional promotion for new and existing customers.

Getting on Gomo

As mentioned, the other element in Optus' new mobile strategy is the launch of Gomo in Australia, and although the telco presently only has one available prepaid plan, it offers a solid balance of data and cost with a great introductory offer. Here's more details on exactly what's included:

Gomo | 30-days prepaid | 18GB data | AU$25

This prepaid subscription plan from Gomo nets you 18GB of data and unlimited international calls (to 15 select destinations) for just AU$25 per 30 days. You'll be able to roll over unused data each month, up to a massive total of 200GB, and you can purchase a 5GB data booster for AU$5 via the app. Until Feb 21, new customers can get the first month for just AU$10, and if you purchase three months you'll get the next three for free.View Deal

Watch anywhere: try our top rated NBA VPN 100% risk-free

The last time these two teams played each other was roughly this time last year, with the eventual champion Lakers eking out a hard-earned 114-112 win in February 2020 despite a 41-point from Celtics star Jayson Tatum, avenging an earlier 139-107 January loss to the C's that season.

Fast forward to the current campaign and both Boston and Los Angeles are among the league's front runners again, the 14-6 Lakers currently third in the Western Conference and the Celtics occupying fourth-place in the East with a 10-6 record.

LA are still firm favorites to make it back-to-back titles in 2021 - a feat that would see them hoist a record 18th banner to surpass the 17 both they and Boston currently hang in their rafters - but have looked more vulnerable than usual of late as they wind down a seven game road trip looking to avoid a third straight loss.

The Celtics, for their part, continue to look like one of the NBA's most dangerous teams on their day, with young star Jaylen Brown in particular taking a major step forward and putting up some huge numbers in the absence of All-Star guard Kemba Walker, who the C's finally welcomed back to their starting line-up on Wednesdasy.

Who will triumph this Saturday and gain some much-needed confidence by beating their biggest historical rival? There's only one way to find out. Read on for how to watch Lakers vs Celtics online and get an NBA live stream wherever you are today.

How to watch NBA blackout games and stream from abroad

Scroll down for a guide to NBA live streaming services all over the world, but first, know that if you can't watch an NBA game on your usual TV channel or streaming service, it might be due to a coverage blackout (in the US) or a geo-blocking restriction (in international markets).

Both can stop you from watching the coverage you want and most likely pay for, especially with many games being shown on national TV.

When either of these are the case, the simplest and most reliable solution is to use a VPN service to change your IP address to a difference location. This will generally let you tune in to your local coverage, just as you would from home, and means you don't have to trawl the sketchier corners of the internet for an illegal stream.

Use a VPN to watch NBA basketball online from anywhere

Lakers vs Celtics live stream: how to watch NBA online in the US

The Lakers vs Celtics game is being shown nationally by ABC tonight. If you have it on cable, great - just head to the ABC website, log-in with your credentials, and stream away. Tip-off for tonight's game is 8.30pm ET / 3.30pm PT in the US

If you don't you'll want to find an over-the-top streaming service that offers ABC as one of its channels - and we can point you towards the best options for most fans.

The best overall way to get an NBA live stream

For most hoops fans, the best way to live stream NBA games is fuboTV, which offers ESPN, TNT and NBA TV along with national channels like ABC, CBS and NBC in most major markets. Packages start from $64.99 a month for the more fully featured cable replacement service and there's a FREE fuboTV trial you can try to see if it's right for you.

It also features regional sports networks (RSNs) for local coverage in many areas, including NBC's affiliates in Philadelphia, Washington and Chicago, plus MSG and SportsNet NY for the New York market and NESN in the Greater Boston area

However, other RSNs including most SportsNet affiliates (including Spectrum SportsNet LA) and New York's YES Network can now only be found on the AT&T TV Now service.

How to watch your NBA team out of market

Those going online-only can consider the merits of an NBA TV Pass , which gets you access to nationally televised games - though it is subject to blackout restrictions, when they apply. Which means you'll also need a VPN for a complete solution if you go this route.

Lakers vs Celtics live stream nba canada

How to watch Lakers vs Celtics: live stream the NBA game in Canada

SportsNet and TSN share NBA coverage in Canada, including not only Raptors games but also coverage of some of the other big games from around the league - like tonight's Lakers vs Celtics showdown.

Coverage is on SN1 in this instance and tip-off is at 8.30pm ET/5.30pm PT tip-off.

It's widely available on cable but also offers a streaming-only services, SN Now (from $9.99 a month).

For fans of teams that aren't the Raptors, Canada's NBA League Pass is another great option. While Raptors games are subject to blackout, no other teams are affected (except when they play the Raptors...), making it well worth considering.

Plus, Canadian hoops fans travelling abroad can always use a VPN to get the same NBA coverage they'd normally watch (and pay for) back home.

Not interested in the commitment or cost of a full-fat Sky Sports subscription, but still want to watch the NBA live in the UK? Don’t worry, as you can also purchase a Now TV Sky Sports Pass.

Your final option is the NBA League Pass, which is available in the UK and will get you every single game of the 2020/21 season from just £3.99 a month for your pick of any three NBA games to watch; £14.99 p/m for full coverage of a single team; or £24.99 a month to get a UK NBA live stream of every single game around.

LA Lakers vs Boston Celtics live stream: how to watch NBA basketball in Australia

If you plan on watching the NBA on TV this season in Australia, then you’ll need a cable package that gives you access to ESPN, as the network owns the country’s NBA broadcast rights and shows the biggest games - including the Los Angeles Lakers vs Boston Celtics match-up, which starts at 12.30pm AEDT on the morning of Sunday,  January 31 in Oz.

You can get a Foxtel subscription with the channel (Foxtel 509) included that will allow you to watch all the season's biggest televised games on ESPN, while free-to-air broadcaster SBS may also be showing select NBA action for free on certain weekends.

Don’t want to sign up for Foxtel just to watch the NBA this season? Then great value over-the-top service Kayo Sports has you covered as it will allow you to stream all of ESPN’s NBA coverage for way less than a pay TV package. Sony Xperia Compact release date, price, news, rumors and just how small it could be

We haven't seen a new small-body Sony phone since 2018's Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, despite the protestations of fans who want a device that's easy to use in one hand.

Since then rumors of a Sony Xperia Compact handset have abounded, with each new generation of Xperia phones expected to have a mini sibling - and each new wave coming without said device.

At this point all hope is nearly lost of seeing this Sony Xperia Compact device, but that hasn't stopped people speculating, and lots of tech fans are expecting to see it land alongside the Sony Xperia 1 III line in mid-2021.

While we've been through this before - there was no compact Xperia 1 II, or Xperia 1, or Xperia XZ3 - that hasn't stopped some leakers getting excited by the prospect of the phone.

We've collected all the leaks below, so you can see what people are saying about the Sony Xperia Compact, and we'll keep this article updated as new credible information comes in.

And no, this isn't an article about the Sony Xperia 5 - while that and the Xperia 5 II are certainly smaller than their 1-series equivalents, they're still not small enough to count as 'compact'.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A small flagship phone from Sony.
  • When is it out? We've no idea - possibly never.
  • How much will it cost? Speculation ranges from budget to premium prices.

Sony Xperia Compact release date and price

Sony Xperia 5 II

Sony Xperia 5 II (Image credit: TechRadar)

We've been hearing rumors of a Sony Xperia Compact phone since 2018 - every year the prospect rears its head, only to ultimately not pan out. As such, we can't say with even a shred of certainty that it'll come out any time.

The most recent leaks suggest it could land alongside the Sony Xperia 1 III, likely to be announced in February or March 2021 and released in the months after, but that seems mostly like a guess.

We don't know a rough price either, as some leaks make the phone sound like a flagship, just with a smaller screen, while other leaks portray the phone as a budget device with weak specs, so it's hard to know right now.

News, rumors and leaks

Multiple Sony Xperia Compact rumors point to it having a 5.5-inch screen, broken up by a 'teardrop' notch. The source linked above also suggests it'll have a Snapdragon 700-series chipset, and another says it'll only have two rear cameras, which makes the phone sound pretty mid-range.

That latter leak was joined by unofficial renders:

These images show a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, as most Sony phones have, as well as the small body, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 21:9 aspect ratio.

One rumor explicitly links the upcoming mini Sony phone to the Xperia 1 III line, calling the phone the Sony Xperia 1 III Compact, and saying that it will land alongside a Premium-suffix counterpart.

Those are all the rumors we've heard for the Sony Xperia Compact that didn't turn out to be for an Xperia 5-series smartphone, but as we hear more we'll add them here.

Strangely, there's a sort-of Sony Xperia Compact in the form of the Sony Xperia Ace, launched in 2019 in Japan with a 5-inch screen, but neither that phone, nor any counterpart, has made its way west. That does suggest the brand hasn't totally given up on small smartphones though.

What we want to see

Here are some things we want to see in the Sony Xperia Compact, including possible features and ways it could stand out from other phones.

1. Value for money

Sony Xperia 1 II

Sony Xperia 1 II (Image credit: TechRadar)

Whether you're a Sony phone fan or not, it's hard to disagree that the brand's handsets are pretty expensive. A high-end mini handset from the company would compete with only one compact phone on the market right now - the iPhone 12 mini, which itself is rather pricey too.

So if Sony offered its Xperia Compact for a low price, it would be hugely competitive, being both a tempting Sony phone and the best-value small-screen device on the market.

That doesn't mean we want Sony to skimp on features, just find ways to offer them at low prices.

2. Good rear cameras

Sony phones don't often grace our best camera phones list, but the snappers aren't terrible either. However for the Xperia Compact to have a small body, it would need to drop some internals and features - which likely includes some rear cameras.

Even though Sony likely can't put a full three-camera main/telephoto/ultra-wide combo on its Compact phone, we'd hope photography power is still retained as much as possible, whether that's from improved processing power or using great sensors.

3. Top battery life

Since a compact phone would have a small screen, it's likely battery life would be stellar - big screens often drain charge faster.

As a result, it's likely the Sony Xperia Compact will have top battery life, but we hope it still has a big battery, so the phone could last for two days or more.

Mi Band 5 review: A solid fitness band with all the best features but one

2020 was a dumpster fire of a year, but it made us realise the importance of a few things like masks, pants (while attending work Zoom calls), and fitness bands. While all of us may not have Instagram-worthy home gyms to motivate ourselves, we can make do with the nudge of a not-so-expensive fitness band. If you are still looking for one of those, Xiaomi’s new Mi Band 5 might just be the right fit for you. Just like the previous generations, Mi Band 5 also comes with a secret sauce of the latest features, average looks at a budget price.

Image: Tech2/Priya Singh

Same old design

For me, a device that is strapped to my wrist for the most part of the day needs to look good. Unfortunately, this fitness band as just average looking. It comes with the same capsule-shaped design as its predecessors, and looks boring. I have to admit that Redmi Smart Band’s sharp-edged rectangular design looks way more trendy and stylish than the Mi Band 5’s repetitive design.

Image: Tech2/Priya Singh

In terms of comfort, the band is extremely lightweight (11.9 gm) and quite comfortable to wear. The straps are not detachable, but unlike the Redmi Smart Band, the band is easy to put on. I wish Xiaomi had tweaked the design this time around and popping in the strap pin was not frustrating. The fitness band has a 1.1-inch AMOLED with a resolution of 126 x 294 pixels. It also offers upto 450 nits brightness that is adjustable.

Features

sleep-data-mi band 5

Xiaomi has aced the features, just as before. The Mi Band 5 comes with a continuous heart rate monitor, stress level monitor, sleep tracker, guided breathing exercises and more. The curated data was reliable, especially the sleep tracker that categorised the data into deep sleep,REM, light sleep and awake categories, and advised me to go to bed by 10, as staying up late leads to "weak immune system and speeds up aging". Thanks for the intel mom, I will go to bed now.

Image: Tech2/Priya Singh

I was impressed that this time, the fitness band comes with a menstrual cycle tracker that not only shows the predicted menstrual period, but also provides details like fertile period and ovulation day. In my experience, I found this data quite helpful, and can't help but wonder why would the company omit such an important feature from its other wearable product – its first smartwatch!

The band comes with several workout modes including outdoor running, walking, indoor cycling and outdoor cycling, indoor running, indoor swim, free exercise, indoor riding, elliptical machine, rope skipping, yoga and rowing machine. It can also auto-detect running and walking. The “Personal Activity Intelligence” (PAI) also measures the overall fitness of the user based on their daily activity, age and gender. An interesting feature motivating the user to keep moving and achieve a better PAI score.

When it comes to watch faces, the band offers a huge palette to choose from. Since the display is pretty responsive, you can check the time, date, steps tracker, battery status and heart rate with just a single tap. You also get raise-to-wake, if you find it inconvenient to tap on the screen every time you want to check something. But this will impact battery life.

Everything looks good with this band, but the missing piece of the puzzle is the blood oxygen monitor. We are still amid a COVID-19 pandemic, and this feature could have really come in handy. This feature is already present in the Honor Band 5, OnePlus Band (Review), Realme Watch and more. Take notes, Xiaomi, because while not a deal breaker, this feature is expected from fitness bands in the COVID era.

The Mi Band 5 uses the Mi Fit app to connect with smartphones. In my opinion, the app really needs some work, as it has a confusing user interface. It took me at least ten minutes to find out how to set an alarm. The option was buried deep inside the settings. It did not take long to sync data from the band like the Xiaomi Wear app that I used for the Mi Revolve Watch, but the latter was definitely more user-friendly. The Mi Fit app presents details about different features including the heart rate monitor and stress level monitor quite nicely.

The new, no-hassle magnetic charging

Image: Tech2/Priya Singh

The best new feature of the band is that it now comes with support for magnetic charging. It is now completely hassle-free to charge, unlike previous generations. The charger just sticks to the back of the band and voilà.

It fills up the dead battery in about two hours. The company claims that the battery can last up to 14 days in a single charge with "normal use", and it lived up to its promise. With my regular use and a couple of battery-eating features like raise-to-wake and sleep tracking, it lasted up to 11 days.

Plugging it for charging once a week or 10 days for a couple of hours will work just fine.

Verdict

Image: Tech2/Priya Singh

Although, the Mi Band 4 is smaller, heavier and has less features, it doesn't make much sense to upgrade it to the Mi Band 5 unless you really want to use the latest one. Mi Band 5 is for those folks who are planning to buy their first fitness band. It has almost every current feature, looks decent and is affordable as well. If you are keen on getting a good basic fitness band, go for the Redmi Smart band that comes in at Rs 1,599.

Audi e-tron Sportback: its digital mirrors will prepare you for the future of driving

Remember side-view mirrors? Those reflective panels that stick out either side of your car, allowing you to see what's behind, and in the lanes beside you? Of course you do, because the majority of cars still feature them - but this may be the beginning of the end.

A number of manufacturers are experimenting with alternative options for keeping an eye on what's around your vehicle, and the all-electric Audi e-tron Sportback is one of the cars where a more futuristic option is available.

The Sportback is a slight variant on Audi's first fully electric car, the e-tron SUV. It has a roofline more akin to a coupe, giving it a sportier and sleeker aesthetic. You'll pay extra for this enhanced look, even though it actually gives you slightly less room inside.

Prices for the e-tron Sportback start at £69,850 / $69,100 (around AU$125,000), but our test loan came with a more powerful, 300kW electric engine and a host of optional extras which pushed its price tag up to £89,470 (around $120,000 / AU$159,000).

Virtual visibility

Onto the tech, and specifically those fancy side mirrors. Audi calls them 'virtual door mirrors' and they were a £1,250 option on our e-tron Sportback 55.

Externally, it looks as if the mirror housing has been lost, with a stalk either side of the car protruding out from the A pillar.

It's a look which takes a little time to get used to, as our mind is so used to seeing traditional mirrors in this area of the car - you'll find other people notice too.

When we were packed up, a family walked past and one of the kids spotted that we didn't have traditional mirrors on the car - and was suitably impressed when we explained what was actually going on here.

So what is going on? Well, each stalk has a camera in it, which then relays what it sees to a small display on the inside of the door. Audi has shaped this display so it's similar to a traditional mirror, but the placement requires a slight change to your driving style.

Audi e-tron Sportback

As the displays are set into the door panels, just below the glass on either side, you actually need to adjust your gaze downwards to view them. It's not a massive change in angle, but it's enough for it to feel unnatural during your first few drives.

We were concerned about potential lag on the cameras, but that wasn't an issue with the virtual door mirrors able to keep pace with live traffic. The screens are also touch sensitive, allowing you to slightly adjust the camera's angle.

Movement feels a little limited, and we felt like we wanted to 'zoom out' a little for a wider field of view, but again that was more because we weren't used to the digital mirror setup.

Audi e-tron Sportback

After a number of drives, we became more accustomed to the virtual mirror setup and found that we naturally started looking in the right place when it came to checking them.

The driver-side mirror is more of an adjustment, as the display is closer to you and thus requires a greater tilt of the head. The passenger-side screen falls more naturally into your eye line, thanks to it being further away.

As well as getting a view either side of the e-tron Sportback, the mirrors can also warn you if there's a vehicle in your blind spot by employing a yellow border on the display, while a green highlight will blink on the corresponding display when you're indicating.

If the e-tron Sportback detects you're driving on a multi-lane road, it'll add in a horizontal white line to denote the separation between the lane you're in and the one next to you, to give you a clearer indication of what else is around you.

Another benefit of having virtual mirrors comes at night, as there's no physical mirror for headlights to reflect off - providing you with a clearer image of what's behind you and reducing the risk of your sight being impaired.

While the cameras worked well on lit roads at night, they were less effective on unlit roads - with visuals not as crisp or clear as a traditional mirror.

As we mentioned at the start, the Audi e-tron Sportback is a slightly more slick model of the standard e-tron SUV, with its sweeping rear profile providing a sportier look while reducing the amount of vertical space in the boot and over the rear seats.

Adults can still comfortably sit in the rear seats, but those over six foot will find that the roofline will make contact with the top of the head - so long journeys here may become arduous.

In general though, the cabin is bright and spacious - especially for those sitting in the front. There's plenty of legroom and a good level of storage. Front seat passengers have access to two USB ports, a wireless phone charger, two cup holders and heated seats.

Meanwhile, for those in the back, there are dedicated climate control dials, plus a further two USB ports for charging devices.

Thanks to the fully-electric engine and a premium level of sound protection, the cabin is also a quiet place to be, even at motorway speeds.

Acceleration is good, with the e-tron Sportback 55 able to propel you from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds and it'll comfortably continue to climb, with a top speed of 124mph if you can find somewhere legal to excel that quickly. Handling is responsive too, and the four wheel drive quattro system provides a high level of grip.

Audi's in-car entertainment system is excellent with dual central touch screens plus a large digital cockpit display behind the steering wheel providing a buffet of options to both driver and passenger. Our only real gripe here is the dual screen setup in the middle is a bit of a fingerprint magnet.

As this is an electric car we need to talk about range, and Audi says the e-tron Sportback can deliver up to 240 miles on a single charge. In real world use, with a mix of driving styles, we got around 180-190 miles - which means you may find yourself at the charger more frequently than you may like.

Taking the car to a fast-charging pump, we were able to go from 30 miles of range to 180 miles in just under 50 minutes, with 120 miles in the tank after 30 minutes.

What's nice about the e-tron and the e-tron Sportback is the fact Audi has fitted them with dual charging ports - one on the left, and one on the right, making it easier when it comes to charging the car, as you don’t have to think about the way you approach it.

The standard e-tron is the better buy for most as it offers pretty much everything the Sportback does, for slightly less - but if you want sport styling to go with your premium SUV, then the Audi e-tron Sportback could well be what you're looking for.

As for those digital door mirrors... they take some getting used to, but they work well and are a neat party trick - plus, they may just be one of the next major changes in our cars.

OneDrive is finally getting a much-needed 64-bit version

First released back in 2007, Microsoft's cloud storage solution OneDrive is finally catching up with the times with the release of a new 64-bit version of the software.

Up until now, users could only access a 32-bit version of the app to store their files, photos and other documents even if they were running a 64-bit version of Windows 10. The problem with running 32-bit software on a 64-bit version of Windows is that 32-bit programs can only access 4GB of system memory even on systems with higher amounts of memory.

By making OneDrive available as a native 64-bit application, users will likely see a performance increase as the software can now use more of their available RAM.

64-bit OneDrive

In an update to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the software giant explained that “OneDrive is now available as a 64-bit install for AMD64-based devices”.

If you're running a system with an Intel chip don't worry as AMD owns the 64-bit architecture and all AMD64 updates are applicable to both AMD and Intel based systems, according to WindowsReport.

Users interested in downloading and installing the new 64-bit version of OneDrive can find the software here.

Microsoft is hard at work on its own quantum computing system

Researchers from Microsoft and the University of Sydney in Australia are currently working on developing their own quantum computing system that uses CMOS-based silicon chips.

Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology is already used to create a number of different computer components and for this reason, scientists developing quantum computers are trying to use this familiar approach instead of liquid-state nuclear-magnetic-resonance or ion traps.

While the notion of a silicon-based quantum computer was first put forth by researcher Bruce Kane back in 1998 in a paper, scientists are just now coming up ways to turn his idea into a reality. One of the biggest hurdles they've had to overcome is the fact that CMOS components generally put off more heat and interfere with quantum bits or qubits.

Keeping qubits cool requires them to be refrigerated at near-zero Kelvin temperatures which is why the quantum computers developed by IBM and Honeywell currently have lower qubit counts. To build a quantum computer with hundreds to thousands of qubits, this problem will need to be solved and it appears that Microsoft is on its way to coming up with a solution.

Gooseberry

Researchers from Microsoft and the University of Sydney recently published a paper in Nature Electronics detailing how they've developed a chip that can support thousands of qubits called Gooseberry.

General manager of quantum hardware at Microsoft Chetan Nayak explained in a blog post how the team headed by Dr. David Reilly has devised a way to overcome quantum computing's cooling problem, saying:

“The chip powering this platform, called Gooseberry, resolves several issues with I/O in quantum computers by operating at 100 milliKelvin (mK) while dissipating sufficiently low power so that it does not exceed the cooling power of a standard commercially-available research refrigerator at these temperatures. This sidesteps the otherwise insurmountable challenge of running thousands of wires into a fridge.”

At the same time, the researchers have also come up with a cryo-compute core that sits above Gooseberry in the quantum stack in order to relay information from the quantum layer. This core is a general-purpose CPU that has been designed to operate at a higher temperature of 2 K as opposed to 100 mK.

Both Gooseberry and its cryo-compute core are still in the development stage but we'll likely hear more from Microsoft once the company actually begins making them.

iPhone 13’s in-screen Touch ID sensor more likely thanks to new report

Another report suggests the iPhone 13 will get in-screen fingerprint sensors, which would finally help top-tier iPhone owners who have been unable to rely on Face ID after wearing masks through nearly a year of COVID outbreak.

There are other advantages to reinstituting Touch ID, especially for folks who simply don’t like staring into their phone. For many likely reasons, Apple is incorporating in-screen fingerprint sensors to future iPhones according to former Apple employees speaking to the Wall Street Journal. Given how this supports Bloomberg’s mid-January report that Touch ID is coming to iPhone displays, we could see this appear in the iPhone 13.

Yes, Apple could wait another year (or more) to implement Touch ID, as neither of the above reports indicated a time frame for in-screen fingerprint sensors coming to iPhones. Two things suggest it could come in the iPhone 13, though: we haven’t heard rumors focus on other new features nearly as much as this one, and we’ve been hearing that iPhones will get in-screen fingerprint sensors for years.

Those rumors have intensified in 2020 to suggest Touch ID in displays is coming in 2021 iPhones, however, like this October leak.

Any other iPhone 13 hints?

The iPhone 12 series was the first to support 5G, though phones that came out a year before already had, like the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. Apple phones are even more behind in adopting in-screen fingerprint sensors, which Android phones have had for years.

There’s another feature common in flagship Android phones that’s rumored to come to the iPhone 13: 120Hz displays. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the brand’s phones would get faster refresh rate displays in September, and the Wall Street Journal report corroborates the assertion.

The 120hz rate makes browsing websites and navigating app menus much smoother than the 60Hz norm, though refreshing the screen twice as fast drains battery faster, too. As the WSJ report notes, the Samsung Galaxy S20 series has countered that with a variable refresh rate screen that raises and lowers the rate based on what you’re doing (120Hz for gaming, 40Hz for scrolling through photos); if the iPhone 13 incorporates a faster refresh rate, it still might be behind Samsung’s tech and suffer worse battery life if it doesn’t opt to manage the 120Hz drain.
