The cheapest Core i7 PC right now has two Gigabit ports and can drive two 4K monitors

What is it? This is the Chuwi CoreBox X, a very small workstation PC that can also be used as a business PC or a thin client (and anything in between).

What makes it special? It's cheap for what it offers and surprisingly small as well.

How much does it cost? It's available at Banggood for $330 (roughly £245/AU$450) until the end of the year when you use code BGDec02 at checkout. That's an extra $90 off the current sale price of $420. Overall, you net a staggering 43% discount on the suggested retail price of $581. Mind-blowing.

Have you reviewed it? Not yet, but we're currently working on a review of its sibling.

Chuwi CoreBox X Core i7 PC: $580.99 $329.99 at Banggood
Save $251 by using the exclusive code BGDec02 at checkout (offer expires on December 31). This is a powerful Intel Core i7 PC with 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. It's great as a business computer, graphics workstation or multi-purpose home PC.View Deal

What else should we know? It runs on an Intel Core i7-6560U processor, which is a low power dual core CPU from 2015 that equipped high end laptops back in the day. It might be old, but it's still capable thanks to an Intel Iris Graphics 540 GPU. Benchmarks show that it is should be competitive with Intel Pentium processors from 2020.

Why buy it? It still comes with a fast 256GB PCIe SATA SSD (with an additional spare 2.5-inch storage slot) with 8GB of RAM (probably expandable to 32GB). Add in an Intel AC Wi-Fi-5 radio card, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, a DP port, an HDMI slot, four USB ports and two audio jacks and you have a pretty capable PC.

Any cons? There are no front-facing ports, no memory cards, and no VESA mount. Also, HP currently has an equally small desktop - the Slim Desktop S01 - that is cheaper, faster, has newer memory and an extra 1TB HDD. But it has slower graphics and lacks dual 4K monitor support and dual Gigabit Ethernet. Decisions, decisions.

Google Maps' newest update aims to make finding things to do easier

You might usually pull up Google Maps to find the quickest way home, or navigate your way around a new neighborhood, but the search giant is hoping to expand the way you use its app.

There’s a new feature in Google Maps – a community feed. It’s similar to the news feed on your Facebook or Instagram account, except it’s designed to let you know what’s happening in your area, with information contributed by locals.

It includes recommendations of local spots, reviews from Google’s Local Guides, and photos of favorite dishes. When you follow your local businesses on Maps, you’ll now get updates directly from them, such as new take-away and delivery options.

You’ll find the new community feed in the ‘Explore’ tab of Google Maps, and you can tailor it to your interests. If you’ve followed a few vegetarian restaurants, or marked an interest in Italian food, then Maps will show you more of these recommendations.

You’ll be able to use the new feature for more than just your local area, though. If you’re looking for something new, you’ll be able to move around the map and find contributed information for just about anywhere in the world – at least, that is what Google has set out to do.

Much of this information was already available on Google Maps one way or another, but certain aspects became particularly helpful in recent months – businesses were able to post updates on their new opening hours, or let customers know that they were moving operations online.

But that was only available if you looked up that specific business’ profile – now, it can appear all in one place, and one that can be specifically curated to you.

In a statement on its blog, a spokesperson for Google said that in early testing of the new feature, “we saw that posts from merchants are seen two times more than before the feed existed”.

The new feature is in the process of rolling out to all phones with iOS or Android.

Salesforce.com is buying work-chatting service Slack for $27.7 billion

Business software pioneer Salesforce.com is buying work-chatting service Slack for $27.7 billion in a deal aimed at giving the two companies a better shot at competing against longtime industry powerhouse Microsoft. The acquisition announced Tuesday is by far the largest in the 21-year history of Salesforce. The San Francisco company was one of the first to begin selling software as a subscription service that could be used on any internet-connected device instead of the more cumbersome process of installing the programs on individual computers.

Salesforce’s flamboyant founder and CEO Marc Benioff hailed the “cloud computing” concept as the wave of the future to much derision initially.

But software as a service has become an industry standard that has turned into a gold mine for longtime software makers. Microsoft for one has developed its own thriving online suite of services, known as Office 365, which includes a Teams chatting service that includes many of the same features as Slack’s 6-year-old application.

Slack in July filed a complaint in the European Union accusing Microsoft of illegally bundling Teams into Office 365 in a way that blocks its removal by customers who may prefer Slack.

Microsoft also has been posing a threat to Salesforce’s main products, a line-up of tools that help other companies manage their customer relationships.

“For Benioff, this is all about Microsoft,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said of Tuesday’s deal. “It’s just clear Microsoft is moving further and further away from Salesforce when it comes to the cloud wars.”

Benioff left no doubt he considered the deal to be a major coup, after losing out to Microsoft in 2016 when the two companies were both vying to buy the professional networking service LinkedIn.

“It’s a match made in heaven,” Benioff said during an ebullient conference call. “We see in Slack a once-in-a-generation company and platform. It’s a central nervous system for so many companies.”

Salesforce has been building on its success in recent years to diversify into other fields, largely through a series of acquisitions that included its previous largest deal, a $15.7 billion purchase of data analytics specialist Tableau Software last year.

Many of the deals have been financed with Salesforce’s stock, which is worth nearly seven times more than it was a decade ago to lift the company’s current market value to $220 billion. Salesforce is using its stock to pay for roughly half of the Slack purchase, with the rest being covered with some cash, with some of the money being borrowed during a time of extraordinarily low-interest rates.

Slack, on the other hand, hasn’t proven as popular with investors, even though its service that publicly launched in 2014 is being increasingly used by companies and government agencies looking for more nimble alternatives than email. Before news reports of a potential deal with Salesforce surfaced last week, Slack’s stock was still hovering around its initial listing price of $26 when the company went public nearly 18 months ago.

“This is a stellar exit strategy for Slack,” said Kate Leggett, an analyst at Forrester Research. “Microsoft Teams is eating Slack’s lunch.”

Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield will be hoping this sale works out better than when another company he started, photo-sharing service Flickr, was sold to Yahoo 15 years ago. Flickr got lost in the shuffle at Yahoo amid years of turmoil before it was finally sold again in 2018 to SmugMug.

In his next act after leaving Flickr, Butterfield decided to focus on gaming with a startup called Tiny Speck that launched in 2009. A few years later, he shifted to the instant messaging service whose name was an acronym for “Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge.”

Leggett predicted Salesforce would benefit from owning Slack because it will add a popular collaboration tool to its own software suite, which is focused on managing customer relationships for businesses and government agencies. She said the need for customer-relations agents and other Salesforce users to swarm around a topic and collaborate remotely has only grown with the coronavirus pandemic that has sent so many office workers home and got many hooked on new online tools.

If all goes smoothly, Salesforce hopes to take control of Slack sometime from May to July next year.

Slack, which is free for people who use the basic version, found quick adoption in the tech industry for its ease of use and its fostering of a more casual mode of conversation than email. The company stopped releasing its daily user count after topping 12 million last year, focusing instead on paid customers, which Butterfield said in March have shown a “massive outpouring of interest” because of the way the pandemic has forced people to work from home.

“I think the pandemic’s played a massive role” in paving the way for the deal, Ives said. “The Zooms, the Slacks, the Microsoft Teams, that’s going to be a new part of the workforce.”

Ives said Benioff was also running out of time to catch up to Microsoft, which remains a secondary player in Salesforce’s core customer-relations-management business, known as CRM, but way ahead in providing a broader array of cloud-based services.

Slack and Salesforce are headquartered about a block away from each other in San Francisco. Slack’s office is in the shadow of the 62-story Salesforce Tower, the tallest building in Northern California.

“I get to look right out my window and you know what I see? Slack,” Benioff said.

Certain PS5 consoles are noisy due to differing cooling fans, report suggests

Is your PS5 noisier than you were expecting? Your console may have a cooling fan of lesser quality inside it, a new report suggests.

French tech website Les Numériques has revealed that not all PlayStation 5 units are created equal, after the outlet noticed a difference in the noise exhibited by the review unit Sony provided them and a second unit purchased through a traditional retail channel.

The site then proceeded to teardown several more PS5 consoles and discovered that the fans inside all five units were completely different from each other.

Only fans

As evidenced by the picture below, the fan said to be from the noisier retail model has 17 blades on it, while the press unit's fan reportedly possesses 23 slightly thinner blades.

While the exact airflow provided by each fan is difficult to quantify, it's generally assumed that fans with fewer blades have to work harder and spin faster to push air through, leading to a noisier fan overall.

As pointed out by our sister site Tom's Hardware, the discovery brings into question the usefulness of many existing PS5 teardown cooling tests, as they may no longer accurately reflect what users can expect from consoles purchased at retail.

That said, so long as your PS5's fan is effectively cooling the console it's attached to, it's doubtful that Sony will issue a replacement.

If you'd like to see which fan is inside your PS5, you can view this easy enough without voiding your console's warranty by popping off the white side panels.

This top SMS tool is still exposing user info online

The popular SMS messaging app for Android GO SMS Pro is still exposing the privately shared photos, videos and files of millions of users despite the fact that Trustwave researchers recently disclosed that the app has a major security flaw.

The cybersecurity firm discovered back in August that media files sent via GO SMS Pro are stored insecurely on a publicly accessible server that can be accessed using some very minor scripting. Although it isn't possible to link the media files to specific users, those files that include faces, names or other identifying characteristics put the privacy of users at risk online.

A new version of GO SMS Pro was uploaded to the Play Store the day before Trustwave publicly disclosed that the app had a serious security flaw. Google then removed the app from its store but at the time of writing, version 7.94 of the app is available to download.

According to Trustwave, it appears that the app's developer GOMO is trying to fix the issue but a complete fix is still not available. In version 7.93 of GO SMS Pro the ability to send media files has been completely disabled while version 7.94 allows users to upload media to the app but these files don't appear to go anywhere when sent to another user.

Still vulnerable

Despite GOMO's attempts to fix its app, Trustwave has confirmed that older media used to verify the original vulnerability is still available online. The exposed media files contain quite a bit of sensitive data including driver's licenses, health insurance account numbers, legal documents and pictures of a more 'romantic' nature.

Cybercriminals are well aware of the flaw in GO SMS Pro and Trustwave has discovered numerous tools and scripts designed to exploit the vulnerability on sites such as Pastebin and GitHub. Several of these more popular tools are updated on a daily basis and the firm has also observed underground forums sharing images downloaded directly from the app's servers.

Unfortunately, GOMO has been less than cooperative when it comes to working with Trustwave on fixing the vulnerability.

The developer has made some changes to GO SMS Pro but for the time being, Trustwave recommends that users “avoid sending media files that you expect to remain private or that may contain sensitive data using this popular messenger app”.

Black Friday sales continuing online.... on hacker forums

Although Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be over, Kaspersky has discovered that there are still plenty of sales to be found on the Dark Web where a driver's license can cost as little as $5 and credit card details start around $6.

To gain a better understanding of how users' personal information can be used in the wrong hands, the cybersecurity firm's researchers analyzed active offers on 10 international darknet forums and marketplaces.

Kaspersky's research found that access to personal data can start as low as 50 cents for and ID with prices depending on the depth and breadth of the data offered.

While the prices for credit card data, banking and e-payment service access have remained relatively unchanged in recent years, new types of data are now available for sale online. These include personal medical records that range in price from $1 to $30, PayPal accounts from $50 to $500 and even selfies with either a passport or driver's license for $40 to $60.

Personal information for sale

Personal information and other data sold on the Dark Web can be used for extortion or to execute online scams and phishing schemes. However, certain types of data, such as access to personal accounts or password databases, can also be abused for reputational harm and other types of social damage such as doxing.

Doxing occurs when a person shares private information about another person without their consent in order to embarrass, hurt or otherwise put them in danger. Although doxing is becoming increasingly common online, 37 percent of millennials think they are too boring to be the victim of cybercrime, according to a report by Kaspersky.

Security researcher at Kaspersky's GreAT, Dmitry Galov explained in a press release that personal information is very much in high demand on the Dark Web, saying:

“In the past few years many areas of our lives have become digitized – and some of them, such us our health, for instance, are especially private. As we see by the increasing number of leaks, this leads to more risks for users. However, there are positive developments too – many organizations are taking extra steps to secure their users’ data. Social media platforms have made especially significant progress in this regard as it is much harder now to steal an account of a specific user. That said, I believe our research highlights how important it is to be aware that your data is in fact in demand and can be used for malicious purposes even if you do not especially have lots of money, do not voice controversial opinions and are generally not very active online.”

To avoid having your personal information stolen online, Kaspersky recommends that users be aware of phishing emails and websites, check permission settings on the apps you use, use two-factor authentication and always consider how the content you share online might be interpreted and used by others.
