CamScanner app affected by Trojan Dropper malware, has over 100 million downloads
There are high chances that you are a user of the CamScanner app, and if not, you must have at least heard of it. CamScanner is a popular ‘Phone PDF Creator’ or ‘Scanner to Scan PDFs’ app, it is available on both Android and iOS, and has over 100 million downloads on Play Store alone. However, the app has now been booted from the Android app store.
Researchers at Kaspersky Labs found malware in the recent version of the app. This malware was harbouring an advertising library containing a malicious module which was identified as "Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Necro.n.".
The CamScanner app is currently unavailable on Google Play Store.
Basically, the Trojan-Dropper malware found within the app was apparently extracting and running another malicious module from an encrypted file included in the app’s resources.
“This “dropped” malware, in turn, is a Trojan Downloader that downloads more malicious modules depending on what its creators are up to at the moment. For example, an app with this malicious code may show intrusive ads and sign users up for paid subscriptions,” the Kaspersky blog notes.
Notably, the malware has only been found in the Android version of the app. The iOS app is still up and running on Apple's App Store.
At the time of writing the story the CamScanner app was not available on the Play Store. Although Kaspersky notes that the developers of the app have already fixed the issue in the latest update of the app. However, in case you haven't received the latest update or if your device isn't compatible with it, it's best you uninstall the app for the meanwhile.

Borderlands 3 PC specs revealed: even 5-year old PCs should be able to run the game just fine
To this day, Borderlands 2, in our books, stands as the king of the looter-shooter genre. Its sequel, Borderlands 3, will arrive on console and PC on 13 September this year. Gearbox Software, the game’s developer, has just outlined the PC specs for the game. And they’re actually quite reasonable.
The game is DirectX 11-compatible, which means you hold-out Windows 7 users will also have the opportunity to play the game.
First, here are the minimum requirements for the game (for 1080p gaming):
- OS: Windows 7/8/10
- CPU: AMD FX-8350 / Intel Core i5-3570
- RAM: 6 GB
- GPU: AMD Radeon HD7970 / Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 2 GB
- Storage: 75 GB
These requirements are quite low and anyone with a 4-5-year old PC should be able to play the game at 1080p without much hassle.
Borderlands 3 will arrive on 13 September.
Recommended specs (for 1440p gaming):
- OS: Windows 7/8/10
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (Intel Core i7-4770)
- RAM: 16 GB
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX590 / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB
- Storage: 75 GB
These requirements are also not that bad and mean that even a mid-spec gaming machine that’s a few years old can run the game very well.
Built on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, the game will release first as an Epic Store exclusive on PC. After six months, it will arrive on other platforms like Steam. This Epic Store exclusivity is a thorn in the sides of gamers everywhere, and will remain one until Epic’s predatory exclusivity deals cease to exist. On the other hand, developers love Epic because Epic is promising them a larger share of the revenue.
Epic exclusivity aside, the game has been developed with AMD’s support, which, hopefully, should mean that we’ll see some excellent performance from AMD cards. This might also mean that we won’t be seeing ray-tracing and DXR support at launch, though.

Apple apologises for keeping Siri recordings, announces sweeping changes to review process
Apple had to face a lot of heat after the company acknowledged that its voice assistant Siri listens to "a small part" of users' conversation without their knowledge. As per the company, this was done to improve Siri and maintain quality via a grading process. Companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon also listen to user conversations and audio clips captured via their respective voice assistants, so what Apple did was nothing new. However, given that Apple has repeatedly highlighted user privacy as a major focus for the company, the reveal was an unpleasant surprise.
Well, this raised a lot of question and as a result, Apple temporarily suspended its grading process all over the world. As per recent developments in this story, Apple has now issued a formal apology saying "we haven’t been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that, we apologise".

First, by default, we will no longer retain audio recordings of Siri interactions. We will continue to use computer-generated transcripts to help Siri improve.

Second, users will be able to opt in to help Siri improve by learning from the audio samples of their requests. We hope that many people will choose to help Siri get better, knowing that Apple respects their data and has strong privacy controls in place. Those who choose to participate will be able to opt-out at any time.

Third, when customers opt-in, only Apple employees will be allowed to listen to audio samples of the Siri interactions. Our team will work to delete any recording which is determined to be an inadvertent trigger of Siri.
This issue came into the spotlight when a whistleblower told The Guardian that Apple records user conversations without their knowledge and these conversations are heard by third-party contractors. These accidental Siri recordings also included some extremely personal conversations.
Apple's latest update makes this an opt-in process with a simple mechanism for opting out. Apple promises that only Apple employees will be allowed to listen to recordings that a user decides to send to the company.
