Surface Laptop 2 release date
After months of speculation, Microsoft finally announced the Surface Laptop 2 release date at its October 2 event in New York City.
Anyone looking to get their hands on this student laptop will be pleased to know that you can Preorder it today, with general availability starting on October 16. This is right in time for the holiday shopping season.
Surface Laptop 2 price
The Surface Laptop 2 is aimed almost exclusively at students and every day users, with its lightweight components and Windows 10 S. The original Surface Laptop struck a fantastic pricing scheme, starting at just $799 (£649, AU$1,099) with a 7th-generation Intel Core m3 processor.
Luckily, even though the specs have been bumped up, the Surface Laptop 2 has only gone up a bit, starting at $999 (£979, AU$1,499) for a quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU. The high-end spec has maintained a similar price as well, and it’ll set you back $2,699 (£2,529, AU$3,750) for an Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.
So, the Surface Laptop 2 is going to continue the original’s legacy of being a great option for anyone looking for a cheap laptop that can still get some work done, and look good while doing it.
Surface Laptop 2 specs
The Surface Laptop was already a pretty good value for a student laptop, but the Surface Laptop 2 builds on that with improved internals, and specifically the new processor.
The Surface Laptop 2 is shipping with the latest Intel Coffee Lake processors, while maintaining the same RAM and Storage configurations as the original. This means, that even at the same price, the Surface Laptop 2 is going to be able to perform much faster than last year’s model, up to 85%, according to Microsoft – while also boosting power efficiency – resulting in longer battery life.
The Surface Laptop 2 is also getting a much-improved display. The resolution is higher – up to 3.4 million pixels. But, what’s more notable with the display is both the improved contrast ratio – up to a mind bending 1,500:1 – and the thin profile.
Surface Laptop 2 features
The Surface Laptop 2 isn’t much different than the original device, but where it differs, it matters. You’re getting so much for your money this time around, and here’s everything you’re getting when you pick up a Surface Laptop 2.
Better screen
One of the most exciting aspects of the Surface Laptop 2 is the improved display – not only is it the same size with a higher resolution of 2,256 x 1,504, but it’ll be much more colorful, covering 100% of the sRGB color spectrum. The Surface Laptop 2 display will rock a 1,500:1 contrast ratio behind the thinnest LCD ever applied to a traditional laptop. We don’t have the exact dimensions right now – but expect it to be thinner than the previous model.
Less noise
Campus life is hectic, and sometimes you just need to concentrate. Luckily, the Surface Laptop 2 won’t just reduce the noise from the fans and the keyboard, but it now includes an improved set of speakers beneath the keyboard that’ll let you stay in your flow longer.
Paint it black
The Surface Laptop was notable due to its wide choice in color, and the Surface Laptop 2 expands on this with a new color options, black. We were expecting a wider choice of colors, but the new black option looks nice and sleek, and should turn heads wherever you go.
